Moving house with a gap between closing dates
The sale closes on the 12th. The purchase closes on the 30th. Everything you own needs an address for eighteen days.
The gap is normal. Panicking about it is optional.
Chains rarely line up. In Jackson County the gap is usually somewhere between a few days and a month, and the two ways through it are a removal company that stores your load on their premises, or a unit you load and control yourself.
The removal-company route is less work and more money, and your things are inaccessible until they deliver. A unit costs less, and you can go and get the winter coats on a Tuesday evening. For a gap under about six weeks, the unit almost always wins.
Month to month is the part that matters
Book a unit on a fixed term and a delayed closing costs you a whole extra month. Month to month with no minimum means you pay for the time you actually use and hand the keys back when the move completes.
That is how we rent, and it is worth checking wherever you end up: a twelve-month minimum hidden in a rental agreement is a genuinely expensive thing to sign for a three-week gap.
What size, honestly
A two to three bedroom house fits a 10×15 if you are reasonably organised. Three to four bedrooms wants a 10×20. If you are planning to put a car in as well, that is a 10×20 on its own.
Go one size up rather than one down. For a short gap you are not optimising for cost per square foot — you are optimising for being able to get the load in on the day without playing Tetris at eight at night with a hired truck due back. The size guide breaks it down room by room.
A drive-up unit is the right call for a move. Backing a truck to the door and unloading straight in saves hours against carrying everything down an indoor corridor.
The box that does not go into storage
Pack one box, or one suitcase each, that travels with you and never sees the unit. Medication, documents, chargers, a change of clothes, the kettle, toilet roll, a knife and a couple of plates, and whatever your children will not sleep without.
Everything else can be in storage. That single box is the difference between camping comfortably at a relative’s for three weeks and driving to a storage unit at ten at night because the passports are in there somewhere.
Label it something obvious and put it in the car, not the truck.
Where to put it
Pick somewhere between the old address and the new one rather than next to either. You will be visiting it from both.
We are on Leigh Way in White City, which for most moves inside the north valley is a straight run up Highway 62 — frequently quicker from north and east Medford than crossing Medford itself. Gate access runs Monday – Sunday, 6:00 AM – 10:00 PM, which covers the evening trips that a move actually generates.
